Overview

Your security system allows you to add lights that are Z-Wave devices. Lighting includes in-wall binary switches, in-wall dimmer switches, lamp modules (plug-in dimmers), appliance modules (plug-in binary outlets), smart outlets, power strips, and light bulbs. With these devices you can turn off and on your lights and dim and brighten your lights. With our rules engine (coming soon) you can do this based on schedules, based on arming and disarming your system, as well as based on other device triggers like your locks locking or a motion detection in a room.

Adding a Device

To add a Z-Wave light or outlet, go to Settings > Devices > Click on the add button and then select Lights, Outlets, and Appliances. The base will then go into inclusion mode and you will be prompted to follow your manufacturers instructions to put the device into inclusion mode. Once the device is added you will hear a confirmation beep from your base and you will be brought to a screen to name the device and to choose an icon. For power strips, you will need to go back into settings and name and change the icon for each of the outlets brought in via the power strip.

Controlling a Device

All of your lights and outlets will be on a card on your mobile or web application dashboard. Through this card you will be able to turn on and off your devices as well as brighten and dim your lights. If a light switch, bulb, or outlet is dimmable you can toggle the device on and off by clicking on it or you can use the slider to turn up and down your light to a specific level.

Removing a Device

To remove a device, go to Settings > Devices and choose your device. You can then delete it by clicking remove and then following your manufacturers directions to put the device in exclusion mode. If a device is not on the network, you may fail the remove and then be prompted to remove the failed device. This will remove the device from the network without it being present. If you would like to add your device to another system, then you will need to reset the device per the manufactures instructions. You can use the general exclusion for resetting devices as well under Settings > Devices > Going to your base > Selecting advanced settings and then clicking General Exclusion.

Replacing a Device

To replace a device, go to Settings > Devices > Choose Your Device and then select Replace Device. You will first be prompted to click on the device you are replacing. If it is not on the network you will be prompted to remove the failed device. After the first device is removed, you will be prompted to add your new device by following the manufacturers instructions to add a device. Once the replace is confirmed, then your device will then work as your other device did with rules. If you attempt to replace a device with a different type of device, for example replacing a light with a lock, then your rules will no longer work for that device.

Offline Devices

If your device loses power due to a circuit being off, it becomes unplugged, or if it becomes lost from the network, then it will be listed as offline. Some devices also may be listed offline if they don't regularly report their status to the base. To correct this issue, first try to control the light in the app to see if it can be controlled and will begin reporting again. If the device does not react to your control, then you should check the device to ensure it has power. If the device has power and is still not on the network, you should remove and re-add or attempt to replace the device to re-add it to the Z-Wave network. If a device is regularly going offline, it may also be out of range. To correct this you can buy a plug-in module or a switch to put between the failing device and the base to increase the range of the network.

FAQ

What type of lighting devices can I add to the system?
You can add Z-Wave lights, outlets, lamp modules, appliance modules, and bulbs to the system. These can be purchased online at Lowes, Home Depot, Amazon, and other smart home device stores.

My device does not come on when I click the icon. What do I do?
Verify that your device has power. Sometimes devices are plugged into outlets on switches that may be off. If a device has power, then remove it and re-add it to the system to ensure it is not a network issue. If the device periodically goes offline, you may want to add a Z-Wave switch or plug-in module to act as a repeater to extend your Z-Wave mesh network.

My device does not show the correct status in my apps. Why is that?
Some Z-Wave lights unfortunately do not report their status when the physical switch is utilized. Due to this, the only way for the base to know when it is on or off is for the base to poll the light. To ensure the best performance of your network, the security system only polls lights every 2 minutes, so you may have to wait, or you can refresh the device by toggling it in your application, or by going to your device settings and clicking refresh. It is highly recommended that when you buy lights you ensure they are reporting devices.

My device is currently shown as offline. What do I do?
If you device is reading offline, first press the icon to see if it will respond to a command and refresh the devices status. If this does not work, verify they light has power. If a device has power, then remove it and re-add it to the system to ensure it is not a network issue. If the device periodically goes offline, you may want to add a Z-Wave switch or plug-in module to act as a repeater to extend your Z-Wave mesh network.

My device regularly goes offline. Can I fix this?
If your device is regularly going offline it may be too far from the base. You can improve your Z-Wave mesh network range by adding light switches or plug-in modules to your network.

How do I change the name of my device?
If you have moved your device in your home or would just like to change the name go to Settings > Device > then the name can be edited by clicking on the name.
