Blue by ADT Door & Window Sensor

Overview

The Blue by ADT Door & Window Sensor helps protect your family by letting you know whenever your doors or windows are opened. It’s easy to set up, and you can get instant alerts with our free mobile app.

Setting up a Blue by ADT Door & Window Sensor

Included in box:
  • Door & window sensor
  • Magnet
  • CR2 Battery
  • Mounting hardware
  • Double-sided tape

Before you get started

You will need:
  • Blue by ADT Smart Home Hub
  • Blue by ADT app on the latest iOS or Android OS
  • Phillips screwdriver or a drill with a Phillips driver bit (optional)
  • Power drill with drill bits for pilot holes (optional)

Pairing

The Blue by ADT Smart Home Hub is the controlling hub that communicates with your sensors. To pair your sensors with the Blue Smart Home Hub, launch your Blue by ADT app. Once logged in, select Menu Devices >(+) Add Device Sensors Door & Window Sensor, and follow the in-app setup guide to pair your sensor.

Note: Sensors and devices in a Blue by ADT system are preconfigured so that they will already be paired to your system and can be added by simply removing the battery tab, as shown in the following steps.

To enable a new sensor:

  1. Pull the exposed plastic battery tab from the back of the Blue by ADT Door & Window Sensor.
  2. The LED will begin to flash to indicate that the sensor is booting.
  3. The LED will continue to blink once per second while attempting to pair with the Blue by ADT Smart Home Hub.
  4. If a network is not found after 90 seconds, the sensor will go into sleep mode. To wake the sensor again, you need to touch the magnet to the sensor as seen in the image below or press the tamper switch, which can be found inside the sensor’s casing, to repeat the pairing process.

Note: The blue pairing LED will stay off during the normal operation.

Mounting your Blue by ADT Door & Window Sensor

Getting started is simple. When ordered as part of a package that includes the Blue by ADT Smart Home Hub, the sensors are synced to your system before we ship them to you. They will pair to your hub as soon as they power up.  For sensors not purchased in a package with the Blue Smart Home Hub, you can add them to your system using the Blue by ADT app.

To continue with the installation of a preconfigured sensor, launch your Blue by ADT app and follow the in-app setup guide or follow these steps:

  1. First, clean the door/window and frame area and let it all fully dry before mounting your sensor and magnet.
  2. Make sure that the sensor and magnet are located less than ½ in. (15mm) apart. For optimal performance, set up the Door & Window sensor on the fixed door jamb/frame and the magnet on the moving part of the door or window. Place the sensor near the top of the door or window and close to the opening.
  3. Use the provided double-sided tape to mount the sensor by removing the tape liner and pressing firmly in place for 30 seconds.
  4. Use the provided double-sided tape to mount the magnet. Make sure the alignment marks (circles) of both the sensor and magnet are facing each other. Remove the tape liner and press firmly in place for 30 seconds.
  5. Alternatively, the sensor and magnet can be screwed into place with the included hardware. The back of the sensor and magnet can be removed to access the screw mounting holes.

Note: The sensor is equipped with a tamper switch that automatically sends a signal to the Blue by ADT Smart Home Hub if the back cover of the sensor is removed or not aligned properly.

Factory resetting your Blue by ADT Door & Window Sensor

To factory reset your device:

  1. Remove the sensor’s cover.
  2. Remove the CR2 battery from the sensor.  Note: Replace the battery with a CR2 battery only.
  3. Press the tamper switch before inserting the battery.
  4. Insert the battery. The sensor should illuminate the LED once when the boot-up/initialization tasks are complete.
  5. Release the tamper switch while the LED is illuminated (it will be lit for 4 seconds). The sensor should then reset to factory default settings and begin searching for the Blue by ADT Smart Home Hub.
  6. If you need to reboot the device, remove the battery, depress and release the tamper switch one time, and then reinsert the battery.
  7. Place the cover back on the sensor.

Note: If the sensor is reset while paired to your account, it will be removed and will need to be set up as a new device.

Changing the name and settings

To change the settings of your door & window sensors, log in to the web portal or iOS/Android app and go to Menu > Devices > Sensors > select desired sensor's name to edit the name and sensor settings.

Placement and entry delay
The placement setting for door & window sensors is used for entry delay purposes, and your icons within the app, your alerts, and your events will differ based on the placement of the sensor.

If you select a door sensor, you will notice that the entry delay can be configured to allow you time to enter the building. Window sensors are set to a 0 second entry delay and will not be configurable as they are not utilized as a means of entry into the home. If you would like the flexibility of an entry delay, but don't want to display a sensor as a door, you can also choose "Other."

Alarm type
To learn about alarm types, please see Arming Your System
  • Stay & Away: Sensors will be monitored in both Stay and Away modes
  • Away Only: Sensors will be monitored only when the system is armed Away
  • Convenience: Sensors can be configured to chime or create a local alarm when the sensor is faulted (this can be used for cabinets or drawers that do not require emergency assistance when opened)
Chime
Chimes are used to alert the user audibly when a door or window is opened. Set the toggle to off in order to disable chimes if desired.

Advanced settings
Advanced settings give you the flexibility to take advantage of sensor features or enable/disable features that may be required for false alarm prevention.

  • Swinger shutdown - Swinger shutdown is a false alarm prevention tool that prevents alarms from sounding for a specific sensor if that sensor has tripped an alarm multiple times in a 5-minute window. The system default for the number of times a sensor can trip before swinger shutdown kicks in for that sensor is 2. This can be modified under the Security system settings, under Advanced Settings.
  • Abort window time - The abort window is a feature meant to help prevent false alarms that gives a user 30 seconds before the alarm is sent to the central monitoring station. This allows for a little longer to disarm the system in case the alarm was in error. If you would like the alarm to immediately go to the central monitoring station, you must toggle this off.
  • Cross zoning - When cross zoning is enabled on a sensor, that sensor alone will not trip the alarm. For the alarm to sound, another non-cross zoned sensor must be triggered as well. For example, if you have a sensor on your front door with cross zoning enabled and a motion sensor in the living room without cross zoning enabled, opening the front door won’t trip the alarm unless someone also walks in front of the motion sensor.
